You already have Genius art or writing in you. You just have to trust and let go of fear to let it out.
As Seth Godin says in his new book The Practice ” A lifetime of brainwashing has taught us that work is about measurable results, that failure is fatal, and that we should be sure that the recipe is proven before we begin. So we bury our dreams”.
“..that we should be sure that the recipe is proven before we begin“. Thats the killer. In my chosen expression of art, in television series animation, Networks are notorious for trying to put “proven recipes” in a bottle and saying “We only want this..” and many wannabe cartoon creators are more than happy to oblige. What we get is repetitive drivel. It’s like a copy machine continually making a copy of a copy. The more you do it, the worse it looks.
And to me,, it’s not enough to say “Well , I do it better”. As the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead said “You don’t want to be the best at what you do… You want to be the only one to do what you do.”
Thats means innovate, not imitate. Strip away your feelings of what you want the results to be in order to find that spark that is only you. You are the only one who can be authentic to yourself. We are too wrapped up in the results. Your desire “to be this, or be that” is based on an acceptance from some executive saying yes to you. Or a big audience saying yes to you.
But YOU have to say yes to you. You say yes to yourself, and if an audience or network, or studio wants to share that experience, thats icing on the cake. But be sure it remains your spirit, your idea. A committee can come in and destroy it in order for them to justify their jobs.
You are the only one that is most like yourself. Who can do you better than you?
